Land Mine Detection

Ice Ball Bullets

25 March 2002 Richard L. Wainright (NHGRI) wainwrir@mail.nih.gov
My Dad came up witth this one: simply outfit helicopter gunships with electric mini-guns capable of firing ice-balls on a suspected land mine area. Current mini-gun technology can fire an IMMENSE volley of projectiles and is reputed to be able to cover every square foot of a football field in less than 1 minute. Once the ice melts, you have a nice soft field ready to be plowed for cultivation. The ammo is pretty cheap, too. Think about
it...

Plow

10 October, 2001 Frank Abernathy
Why can't the military take a railroad bar or an i-beam or something else and just drag it along mine-infested fields to set off all the mines? Just like plowing a field. They could attach chains to it and wench it from one end to the other or use a blimp or helicopter to pull it across. Or they could plant explosives in the ground at regular intervals to set off the mines.

Better still: persuade your senator to vote in favor of the USA signing the Ottawa international convention against the use of landmines, and thus joining the ranks of civilized countries.

High Intensity Lasers from helicopters or land based might be able to
detonate mines or deactivate them by melting the trip wires. In the case of
pressure plate mines, the I-beam suggestion or even an axle with metal
wheels that roll along could trip them. Perhaps a long line of wheels made
like the lunar rovers to cover uneven terrain would be a better idea. They
might not be damaged severely either.

They already have armored tank like vehicles that have long armored steel arms extending out in front of it. The arms have large heavy armored steel rollers on it ( similar to those on a pavment compactor ). The vehicle drives along pushing the rollers way out in front and blows up the mines as it goes. They have been using them in Asia (Vietnam for example) for years. I've seen them in action and they work very well.
